House of Marianne, Our Namesake

In 1883, Mother Marianne of St. Anthony Convent in Syracuse, New York, was summoned to Hawaii to care for people living with Hansen’s Disease. Along with six sisters, she answered the call. St. Marianne knew the importance of cleanliness in medicine and possessed a spirit of self-sacrifice, helping her to provide life-changing care for over 35 years. Along with this care, she lifted patients’ spirits by surrounding them in gardens, flowers, and trees, and living aloha by dressing them in fashionable clothing.

In 2012, Mother Marianne was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI for her years of service, and her remains are enshrined at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu.

Today, our Hale O Meleana community honors St. Marianne’s servitude and passion for helping others by using her favorite flower, the glorious plumeria, in our logo and providing the best care for our kÅ«puna while glorifying God. It is our greatest desire to offer life-enhancing support and care that helps residents live rich, fulfilled lives.
